Which is Better - OTTD or TTD Patch?

Hi all,
Don't want to start any major arguments but was wondering which is
better?
Used to play TTD ages ago on my old 486 and after playing Locomotion
recently wanted to play TTD again. Both seem to have similar features so was
just wondering it one was better than the other? including copying
legalities as I distribute to other family members who don't have net
access.

Thanks anyways

Locomotion is actually TTD2, it's created as the new version of TTD by the
original creator of TTD, Chris Sawyer. I've played the demo, and quickly
reverted back to TTD+patch.
As to OTTD, I've never played that so I can't comment on it.

I don't know if you can say one is better as the other. TTDPATCH has a
lot more options as openTTD especially concerning new graphics. Another
really good thing is the path based signaling.
I think the only reason you want to play openttd is because you play
multi player or you want to play with bigger maps. (or od shaped maps)

Don't ask how legal openttd is because you will start a fight then
:)...lets say there are some different opinions about it.

Choosing between OTTD and The Patch is like a custody battle over a
cute, defenceless old age pensioner. Both children (The Patch and OTTD)
are passionate about their rights, efforts and future. Both want to
inherit the future from the venerable sire which sprang from the loins
of our Lord, Chris Sawyer.

It's not wise to get in the way of any custody battle ... but I will.

For what it's worth, I've tried both, but find OTTD easier to keep up
with. As I get busier in The Real World, I have less and less time to
spend devoted to obscure flags in INI files. That's just me. Your
mileage might vary. I'm not claiming this is the only selection criterion.

OTTD lacks proper auto-convert of track types (e.g. convert all my
tracks and trains from monorail to maglev - and I hate this lack of
functionality) but it is easy to configure, well-behaved, stable and
catches up with The Patch before too long e.g. canals, bigger airports.

Sticking my neck out, I feel that soon The Patch must eventually reach
the limits of what a DOS-based program like TTD can achieve. After
that, I believe there is no alternative but to re-create the program as
100% Windows - like OTTD did. Since we want TTD to be immortal*, we
must look TTD written for Windows rather than for DOS.

[And now that Windows runs on the Macintosh, we need to look at
MacTransport!]

I have nothing but respect for Josef and his band of resistance
fighters. Anyone who works to keep Transport Tycoon working and powerful
in these days of gigabyte shoot-em-ups that appear and disappear within
two weeks has my admiration.

TTD is a classic, like Tetris, which has become a fan-based generic
industry in its own right.

TTD must survive for the sake of our children and their teddy bears, and
all who contribute to the bloodline of TTD are blessed by the Church of
Transport Tycoon.

Come to think of it, the rift between The Patch and OTTD is more akin to
Catholic vs Protestant. Anyway...

[Shakes holy water all over the place]

Amen.

Hmm, that's an interesting way to think about it indeed.

My own opinion: I think both games are good, and both have their own
potential. OpenTTD is slowly but surely catching up with the newgrf
features, but still has a long way to go. newgrf is the main thing I want
improved in OpenTTD, although TTDPatch also has various other features which
would be nice in OpenTTD but aren't quite there yet. OpenTTD's multiplatform
support is most excellent, as is its multiplayer and larger maps (512x512
can make the game quite fun, just gives you that bit of extra space to
expand - standard 256x256 maps do feel quite small, especially if you're
using a high resolution and can fit most of the map onto a couple of zoomed
out screens!).

As for copying them, both OpenTTD and TTDPatch are under the GNU General
Public License and can be copied freely, but OpenTTD requires the original
game data files, and TTDPatch requires the original game executable itself.
Whether it's legal to use them on more than one computer depends on the
licence agreement included with the game, which I don't have to hand so
can't check that out.
